The GGP engaged me immediately. Genre-bending, gender-bending, taboo even in a modern sense, I think it's so layered and encourages so much speculation with how much is left unsaid and mysterious. I think it does a great job with the idea of leaving history alone, and not disturbing what you don't understand, and yet! it can't be helped because we are curious animals. Not to mention how horrifying it actually is too. Helen is everywhere and you cannot escape her. 'Her life is mine, to use as I see fit.' Genuinely awful.
The only thing I would have liked to see more is greater detail of the confrontation and what actually happened with Pan/Mary/Helen. I completely get that Machen was just keeping it esoteric and unclear for suspense and mystery's sake, but I'm ravenous for answers about everything. I've seen that the religious and occult themes have been widely studied, but I'm particularly interested in the sexual themes. I'm going to have to read some literature on this! I'll be on JSTOR for some time....more
