Overall, I loved reading this book, even though it sometimes felt like I was walking through molasses. My interest in the characters and the plot line is what kept me struggling through this massive, dense book. Hugo’s use of symbolism to convey everyone’s depression was astonishing, and he provided great imagery that really transported you back to the early 19th century. I would recommend this book to someone who likes the musical, and wants a deeper understanding of the characters and all the many many cut plot points. That was my main reason for choosing this book.
Review 2 Victor Hugo's Les Miserables is an amazing classic. The detail in the characters and setting are what really bring the story to life in your mind. While reading this enormous book, I could completely visualize myself inside the stories of fighting and despair, love and hope. Anyone who reads Les Mis will fall in love with the characters instantly. Every character is unique and interesting and leaves you want more. While the book can be very bland, boring, and hard to get through, if you push through it, you learn the amazing stories of all the characters. That is what made reading this worth it....more
