I have always loved the fluffier, lighter, innocent love-stories by people like L.M. Montgomery and Gene Stratton-Porter, but this was an entirely different breed. This book made me feel like I was part of it, one with Scarlet. I laughed with her. I longed with her, and worked and strived and hated with her. I loved with her, and I cried with her. Buckets. That part in the end with Melly…let's just say that I started to rethink my stance that people can’t run out of tears. Cause I think I almost did. Scarlet felt so integral to my being that I literally started having eerie, slightly seductive dreams where I WAS Scarlet O’Hara, resplendent in green-silk hoop-skirts. That darned book invaded every part of my being, occupying my thoughts, making me view everything through the lens of Gone With the Wind. My mom may call this story a downer, but to me, it’s come close to being a literal epoch in my life. This book made me hurt, but it felt good. I’m so glad I read it.

I have never met anyone like Scarlet, in literature or in reality in my entire life. I can’t say I loved her, because I really couldn’t: she made me miserable, and I hated her, just like one might hate a bad, damaging extension of themselves. But she is so human, and so passionate and magnetic…and hateful. It would have been easier to read her story if I could have just sat back and viewed her life from afar, indifferent to her agonies and failures, an observer and nothing more. But Mitchell, of course, did not allow for that. As I sank into the alluring, harsh and romantic world of this book, Scarlet became part of me. If she was rejected, I felt rejected. If she found bliss, I was happy. (view spoiler) If she was scorned and snubbed, I felt hurt. Yeah…it sounds miserable, right? And it was, because whatever breathtaking sensation that this book gives me, it isn’t really a pleasant one. It’s deeper than that, beyond the bounds enjoyable or not so. This book is just experiencing plain life, in its most brutal and beautiful forms. And just like life, it has its moments of joy…but is largely dominated by pain.

The thing that definitely pushed my hate for Scarlet over the edge was her relations with Rhett. Though I may have been sympathetic to her love for Ashley in the beginning, that lustful attachment died quickly from the list of my hopes and dreams. Now, I just wanted Scarlet to forget him, to let go of her obsessive love for him, that was more a petted dream than a reality, and recognize Rhett for what he was: her soul-mate. (view spoiler) And it hurt so bad! There were times when I could have screamed…and times when I basically did, as quietly as possible so that I wouldn’t wake my sleeping family members. I am afraid this book often kept me awake far later than was good for me. It was so obvious! (view spoiler) That’s when the book hit its most painful point. That scene when Rhett pours out his broken, hopeless, loving heart to Melanie while Scarlet is sick is so incredibly agonizing…and beautiful…and I went back and re-read approximately 2 million times. Oh, it hurt it hurt it hurt! But I couldn’t stop. Stopping would be like permanently ending a part of my personality…and when I finished it. Ughh. That ending. It still gives me the chills just to think of it, but, oh, how mad it made me! I felt robbed. Here I was, after spending what felt like a lifetime of emotions and hopes and dreams in this all-consuming story, you give me and ending like THAT??? Seriously, Mitchell? (view spoiler) Because everything in this book was done perfectly, from vivid, raw writing style to life-like, abandoned characters….It was right. ...more "
