It took me almost two months to read this book because I had to set it down for a long break about two thirds of the way through. This book is very difficult to read, which is the point, but if drug abuse is triggering for you this might not be the book for you. Kingsolver is so masterful in her writing that you get dragged down to this dark depth right along side Demon. I spent so much of the book hoping and praying that Demon would make a better choice but I knew that with everything against him there was no other choice he would make.
Throughout everything though Demon remained Demon, never once did he become someone unlikable. He remained kind and steadfast through it all. He was the embodiment of “despite, despite, despite.” I never once stopped rooting for him.
He was the perfect first person narrator, Demon is incredibly smart and listening in on his inner thoughts was what really made the story for me. I highly recommend the audio book, listening to the way Demon says “shit” is so satisfying lol.
As I mentioned earlier I had to take a break from reading for a while as it got increasingly heavy the further in I got. I almost stopped reading entirely but I’m so glad I finished because the turning point at Devils Bathtub made it worth it. The moment Fast Forward fell from the cliff I gasped out loud. It was like I was watching it happen in slow motion. I felt immersed in the story in a way that hasn’t happened for me in years. And in the same way that Kingsolver’s writing made me feel like I was there with Demon at his worst, it also made me feel like I was there as he struggled towards recovery. No ending has ever left me feeling so elated as this one. Finishing this book felt like saying goodbye to a childhood friend. It made me feel like I was saying goodbye to my uncle again, but this time he was leaving at peace....more
