It was the age-old question: who suffers more, the gentleman in the badly tied cravat or those who must look upon him?
“Those men (and they were men, and they were always white men) were not required to move around the Met to gain more experience or ‘rounding’ like me and my BAME colleagues. Some of them had been retained by the same command for the entirety of their career, moving through the ranks without receiving experiences in any other areas. What I was witnessing, right in front of my eyes, was structural failings and systemic racism and sexism. It would have made sense if they were going to advertise the job, but just waving in someone else they knew was so unfair.”

“The Met did not want us discussing the Sarah Everard case with students and I questioned why, though no explanation was forthcoming.”

“Fewer than 7 per cent of the 95,000 domestic abuse-related crimes reported to the Met in 2022 resulted in a charge. Of those charged, 66.4 per cent of those that reached court resulted in a conviction, which means that around just 4 per cent of those 95,000 people who reported domestic abuse will see their abuser held accountable in a court of law. Out of all forces in England and Wales, the Met have the most woeful figures, which is some cause for concern when two women are killed every week by a current or former partner in England and Wales.”

“When the officers’ women obtained the best French stockings, the local women went stockingless. When their rivals also went stockingless, the Frenchwomen took to wearing revolting knitted stockings in which they still contrived to look chic. At this the opposition gave up the unequal struggle and victory went to the conquered.”

“Time’s strange, isn’t it,’ I say after a while. She meets my eye but doesn’t speak. ‘Sometimes it moves so slowly, and then suddenly …’ I move my hand as fast as I can, demonstrating the way that twenty years of my life just happened. ‘That’s the sort of thing we don’t think about as children,’ says the priest. ‘We just were, you know?”
