There was a particular sort of indignity that came along with being simultaneously well-educated and in dire straits financially.
I like this quote because it captures the frustrating gap between education and financial stability. Society often tells us that if we study hard and become well educated, success should follow. When that doesn’t happen, it can feel especially humiliating, as though all that effort should have guaranteed something more secure.
