The Great Gatsby was an amazing book that captures the futility of dreams and holding onto the past. It captures this through t The best books are the ones that sit with you after you're done reading them, and that's exactly what The Great Gatsby is. The Great Gatsby was an amazing book that captures the futility of dreams and holding onto the past. It captures this through the unreliable narrator, Nick Carraway, a "old-semi-rich" man about 29 years old, who lives on West Egg, Long Island. The story revolves around his neighbor, Jay Gatsby, originally Jay Gatz. Jay Gatsby is his extravagant, ridiculously rich neighbor who throws extravagant, undescribably lavish parties every night. Everyone who was anyone would attend, invited or not. Jay Gatsby used to be part of the army, and before he left, he fell in love with Daisy Buchanan, who is married to the aggressive Tom Buchanan, who is having an affair with another woman (Myrtle). Daisy Buchanan happens to be Nick's cousin. Daisy Buchanan lives across the body of water on East Egg, Long Island, with her husband, Tom. Nick and Jay happened to be both be soldiers, so Jay confided in Nick about his aspirations with Daisy, since they used to be in love before he went to the army. This then leads to Jay confiding in Nick to help him win Daisy back from Tom, which fails beyond belief. All in all, this was a fascinating read, and I would read it again, but the reason I took a star off is just that sometimes I feel the metaphorical language gets in the way of understanding the plot, but that might just be something I have to work on, because other times it greatly enhanced it.

**From Here on Spoilers ** So don't read if you haven't finished the book yet.
As aforementioned, Jay throws extravagant, lavish parties, and he hopes that Daisy will notice these parties from across the river and come to one, where they can catch up. He does hope Daisy sees, but he hopes more that his success will come to her ears, and she will want to see it for herself, and henceforth attend. However, that doesn't happen, so Jay catches up with Nick, since Daisy is his cousin, so he asks her to invite her to his house, and so he does, then goes on to invite Jay as well. Nick reintroduces Jay to Daisy, and while Jay is melancholy and worried at first, eventually the evening relaxes as they get to remember each other better, and at the end of the day, Nick leaves them both alone. Jay had toured Daisy around his gothic monster of a mansion. Anyway, fast forward some and then he invites Daisy to his party, but Tom comes with her, and for most of the time she finds it quite a garish party because she finds the customs and sociality of West Egg perturbing. She didn't find it quite enjoyable. Anyways, fast forward some more, Daisy invites Jay to her house, and this is when the true disaster unfolds. Jay comes over with Nick, and it is an undescribably, unfathomably hot day. Like undescribably hot. Jay goes inside with Nick and finds Daisy, and when Tom comes in, she ushers him away to get cold drinks, but when he leaves, she kisses Jay and tells him, "You know I love you". When Tom comes back with refreshments, they go outside to the heat again, and that's when Daisy suggests they go to town. Tom tries to put away this silly idea, but eventually they go. Tom takes Gatsby's yellow car, which Gatsby warns only has enough gasoline to take them to town, but not enough to take them back. Accompanying Tom were Nick and Jordan. Accompanying Jay was just Daisy. Tom stops by to refill his gas, and there, Myrtle's husband, Wilson, is standing, looking green, according to Nick. Mrytle is the woman with whom Tom is having an affair. We learn later that they are moving to West Egg, Long Island. Anyways, they meet up in town, and Daisy says she wants to go to the movies with Jay, but Tom won't have it and says it under the pretense of it being too hot. Instead, he says that they all WILL go to Central Park, where they will book a hotel suite. He constantly looks back to make sure that Jay doesn't run off with Daisy. Anyways, fast forward some, they're in the rented suite, and Tom gets super defensive about Daisy, considering that Daisy said to Jay that she loved him earlier in front of him (After he came back with drinks and they suggested going to town). It's also important to note that it was with courage that Jay acted, and Nick described him as "excited." He then tells Tom that he and Daisy love each other and that Daisy never loved him, and Daisy had tried to stop him from continuing his dialogue, but he went on with it, and Daisy confirms it at first, but then she breaks down in tears, and says that she did love him before, and to say she didn't would be a stark lie. Anyways, fast forward some, they're driving home, same arrangement, and on the way home, Tom is laughing and being social as if nothing happened, and so anyways, Tom stops when he notices a large commotion at Wilson's place (Myrtle's Husband), and so he goes and finds out that Myrtle died when a yellow car hit her. Anyways, Wilson was deeply disturbed, like hysterical in his grief, he only said Oh God in a loop. No one could get him to talk. Anyways Tom tells Wilson that the yellow car is not his and that it belongs to someone else. Fast forward some, and we're back at the eggs, and Jay and Nick are talking. Jay tells Nick that Daisy was driving, and she said it would help calm her nerves, but she hit Myrtle accidentally. Jay says he will take the blame to protect Daisy. Anyways, fast forward, and Wilson is obviously still in deep grief about his wife, so he goes to Tom's house, asks whose car it is, and Tom says it's Gatsby's, and he tells him he lives in West Egg. The unsuspecting Gatsby was in his pool, and that's when Wilson shot him, and then killed himself. Nick describes blood seeping into the pool. Anyways, fast forward some, Nick plans the funeral, and as mentioned earlier, everyone went to his parties, but literally NO ONE except Nick and Jay's father came to his funeral, as well as a man Nick describes as "Owl-eyes." Daisy doesn't come, in fact, she escapes with Tom.

The End.

It was a very, VERY Chaotic ending. Fitzgerald's genius metaphorical word play really worked its magic here. The ending really sits with you. It's a great book, though. ...more "
