The style is brilliant; with Isabella recounting her own childhood onwards from the perspective of her 80 year old (roughly) self, it becomes rich with the humour you expect from a kindly grandparent. It reminds me of when I was little and my grandad would tell me about himself which, to me, always sounded like thrilling adventures of an unsuspecting hero.
Combining this with the scientific, academic perspective… chef’s kiss! I have also been reading Unruly by David Mitchell which has a similar feel to this, whereby the details are related honestly and plainly, but then a witty commentary is added. Isabella’s own reflections of her naïvety and the lack of knowledge of dragon scholars at the time really makes me chuckle whilst still sounding like the academic papers I’ve read.
The intersection of these two styles have made this book wholesome and intellectual. Next you add the plot! With an autobiographical style you would not necessarily expect to feel a sense of mystery and urgency so strongly, but Brennan really achieves this. Offering no spoilers, but you will be itching for the answers as much as Isabella’s character.
This is a very personal review; I can imagine there are people who this book wouldn’t suit, but for me, this book is absolutely perfect....more
