Larry Watson is a very eminent writer who published around a dozen extremely successful books. He is known for writing exciting suspense and psychological thriller stories with a PH.D. in creative writing, so he undoubtedly knows what he is doing. Montana 1948 is a medley between suspense and historical fiction. This book covers it all, ranging from fun family dinners to murders within the family. I have always been a huge enthusiast for mystery books. Growing up, I refused to read anything other than a book packed with plot twists and suspense, so this book was a perfect fit for me.
There are many characters in this book, with the narrator being a young boy named David. He does not play a significant role in the book, but it was very intelligent of the author to do that because it showed his maturity developing over the book. The overarching theme was David’s dad Wesley, choosing between loyalty within the family and doing what is right for justice as the sheriff of a small town of Bentrock, Montana. Overall, the characters of this book were very believable with a couple exceptions because of an extreme contradiction between their reputation and their actions.
The pace of this book is extremely fast, providing jaw-dropping information every time one flips a page. Personally, I love books written like that because it helps me retain my attention, but if you would rather read a long lasting book that you could sit back and enjoy, this book probably isn’t the best for you. An extremely similar book I read and enjoyed as a kid was The Westing Game. Similarly, it is a very short mystery book with extreme plot twists nearly every couple pages.
Although this book is exhilarating, the author does not do the best job making the story believable as the motive for murder seems too rushed and insignificant for such a big murder to happen. I believe if the author took some more time leading up to the murder, he definitely could have changed the book from great to extraordinary.
Although there is no personal connection why Larry Watson wrote this book, it is clear why. He wanted to depict some of the racism and scenarios in Montana during those periods. For example, Wesley says, “She’s got a great sense of drama, that one— (Watson 35).” This quote portrays the prejudice against Indians during that time period from nearly everyone in the town. Additionally, I believe that due to some of the strong contents such as murders, rapes, and racism, this book is not suitable for anyone younger than 14.
To sum up, if you enjoy fun but fast books with complex backgrounds involving loyalty versus justice, this is the book for you. If not, Montana 1948 will still be a great pickup, however, you may find troubles with its fast pacing and a little unbelievable plot twists and characters. ...more "

"This book has been a life changer for me. I am not very surprised that Frank killed himself with the glass because he knew it was over for him and his reputation was ruined forever. I know it will be a very gruel and long process for the Hayden family to recover from this but I have faith they can do it.
