I loved this book dearly,and I know that there are several set in the south books that have over the years become legends (I'm tired of using the word classics so I shall use legends) i.e. To kill a Mockingbird, and the much loved Gone with the Wind. I sincerly think that this book will become just as loved as the books I have mentioned. Alright I'll stop praising the book and summarize it.

It's the 1960s, the Civil rights Movement is heavily underway, and three women are miserable with how things are down in Jackson, Mississippi (I may be from the south but I'm still not sure if I know how to spell Mississippi correctly, if I'm wrong, sorry) so they set out to change a few things. Let give you some background first on the characters first. Aibileen Clarke is a middle aged black maid who is raising her seventeenth white child. She is strong, wise and very understanding, but since the death of her only son a bitter seed has been planted in her and she just can't find in her heart to be so accepting of all the shit people are giving her. Minny Jackson is the best cook in the county, a great maid, and as sassy as they come. (I must say now that she is perhaps my favorite character) Unfortunatley her sassiness and take shit from no one attitude has left her without a job for at least the fifteenth time, but when a outsider to town hires her she learns secrets about her employer that leave even her without words.

And finally, the last member of our trio, Eugenia Skeeter Phelan. Eugenia, known to everyone but her nickname intolerant mother as Skeeter, is a young white woman who has rascist friends. That kind of half sums her up, she has a dream to become a writer in New York City and the only person around her who supports her in her dreams is her maid Conastantine, who has unexplicably disapeared. With her diploma in writing, or something like that, a dream to become a published author and a desire to see a unprejudiced society she and the two maids decide to write a book about what it's like to be a maid in Jackson, Mississippi. Things happen, love is found, equality is on it's way and many toilets are left on a bitch's lawn. All of this and more in The Help. ...more "
