Wonderful point of view from the Baotians this book, expanded upon where we're given more than a small slice of life from their eyes. This ranges throughout the book from leaders to ordinary citizens. It gave a balanced look at them while not diminishing the threat they present this book and they do present a threat. What I enjoyed about it was how intelligently it was approached without compromising any of the strengths Aevum possesses.

Romance and family are also themes continued on, expanding to other characters with a delight one could feel off the pages. Nor was this only on our heroes side, but Baotian families and memories were also explored. Friends made in previous books get at least a cameo with that perfect sense of continuity that I love in any series. Not one appearance felt forced for the sake of making an appearance, everyone who showed up felt like they should be there.

With all of this, action is not watered down, and there are plenty of explosions and fire exchange to satisfied the need for things to go boom look for in an action flick. However, the skillful use of technology had won the day in a way so many other military scifi should have at least once instead of the standard 'we shoot at them, they shoot at us' approach that is pretty much standard in the genre sad to say. It was presented in no less an exciting way as pouring out immense firepower usually has. Including those wonderful villain reaction moments when they realize they are in a lot of trouble (yes I love those moments).

It was a wonderful romp in the world of Aevum that had me turning pages on every break at work and afterwards so I did end up finishing it in less than a day. Few authors ensnare me that much, including many of the greats of the golden age. I hope each and every one who chooses to read this enjoys it equally as I had, and will with re-reading. Its definitely a book and series that I will go back to again and again. ...more "
