The advantage of handwriting concentrates in two specific moments: the initial capture of a new idea, and the process of active synthesis of complex material.
Incidentally that’s what has been happening. I started with high hopes for Claude/GPT, then I grew frustrated and shifted to writing on a notebook while thinking, and then post the pictures to LLM. After a while I inevitably got tired of the friction of taking pictures and converting notes, so I bought a touchscreen laptop with which I can write and convert notes more smoothly. This process is not at all backed by any conviction that writing is in any way essential and irreplaceable by typing and chatting with GPT. I just could not make any progress on my research projects without writing, with a pen.
