I love it, it is so full of useful information about health and how to plan for a long life, not only in years but even healthy years, which he calls "healthspan". There are 2 authors but D I listen to the audio version of this book almost every day. I love it, it is so full of useful information about health and how to plan for a long life, not only in years but even healthy years, which he calls "healthspan". There are 2 authors but Dr Peter Attia MD is the one reading the audiobook so that's who I am talking about when I say "he".

I love his discussion of the 4 horsemen, the 4 chronic illnesses that kill most Americans, and of the objective, strategy, tactics steps in planning how to prevent and delay these, rather than waiting until you are diagnosed near the end of a slow process.

He doesn't like generalizations and relies heavily on what is known through research. He also reminds the reader that we are all different, with different issues, and he can't give just one answer to a question like "What should I do to stay healthy or live long" because that skips over the necessity of having a strategy that is relevant to your objective and takes into account which illnesses and genetic predispositions you are dealing with. It's a shortcut and it's a mistake to skip that step.

He labels the old way of dealing with chronic illnesses "Medicine 2.0" and he practices Medicine 3.0, where you are working with sometimes healthy people to help them plan ahead.

His 4 favorite tactics get a lot of attention in the 2nd half of the book. I have listened to the whole book at least 4 times in the last 6 months and this section maybe 3 or 4 times more.

The 4 tactics don't get taught much in medical school but they can be more powerful than medications, they are exercise, nutrition, sleep, and mental and emotional health. A 5th tactic he calls "endogenous molecules" which includes prescription drugs, injections such as vaccines, and nutritional supplements. This being much more studied by doctors in training, does not get its own chapter but he mentions a few times throughout the book about certain drugs that he recommends to his patients.

Early on he has some stories of what happened when he was in residency at a hospital in Baltimore, and he still practices medicine but takes a different approach which I love.

He also discusses an expedition he made to Easter Island with a few friends, that was an interesting part of the book.

I am also watching a lot of his videos on YouTube and trying to implement what he is talking about especially with exercise, which he has a lot of knowledge about, having lifted weights or done other intense forms of exercise since he was a teenager. And he learns from experts in these fields constantly through a podcast where he interviews them.

I highly recommend this book to those who want to be healthier, no matter what your age or exercise status is. ...more "
