This, this is the book that will stay with me for a long time as I am still pondering just when I knew what was really happening and how did I know it. Eliza is charged with taking care of her adopted niece, young and very precocious Piper, while her sister takes a few days to just get away. The problem is that Bea, Piper’s mom, doesn’t return and seemingly has disappeared. With a stream of consciousness narration that teasingly reveals the details of Bea’s disappearance as well as a lot of family tragedy along the way, this book held me captive from beginning to end. There was no jumping to another book because I was completed immersed in the drama of this well-crafted story. The clues were interspersed in the narrative and the twists that were revealed in this intricate tale kept me guessing and involved in trying to figure out where Bea was and why she would leave Piper behind. The tension escalates once Eliza and Piper go to the cabin in the mountains, a place with an expertly described eerie feeling that intrigued me, reminding me of a Hitchcock story as it lured me to go in the wrong direction and then guess again and again. With multiple layers and head-spinning secrets, this is a book that is terrifyingly brilliant, with whip smart characterization and an edgy suspense that kept me intrigued and reading long into the night. Massively entertaining and a cleverly written page turner, this would be my choice for the next book for my book club, just so I can talk about it with others who survived the dramatic climax and the fast-moving action of this unparalleled thriller. The tension and secrets are abundant and so is the slam dunk value of this masterfully written and hypnotically memorable novel.
