## Beginning

This book honestly caught my eye when I first saw it. I just felt it was going to be a good book.

## Summary

*Superman: Dawnbreaker* by Matt De La Peña is about a high school student named Clark Kent, who has super hearing, super speed, and super strength.

Clark used to be the star player of his high school football team before he quit, leaving his teammates struggling without him. During a storm, Clark notices a man dressed in brown who later steals an SUV and drives it toward Clark's friend and former teammate, Paul. Clark tries to save Paul but injures his shoulder, leaving Clark feeling guilty and questioning his powers. At school, Clark hears Gloria Alvarez crying from the other side of campus and learns that people are disappearing from Smallville.

Later, Clark saves a helicopter flying over his parents' farm. Bryan Mankins calls him a hero, but Clark refuses to take credit. At the library, Lana Lang wants to investigate the Mankins Corporation and teaches Clark interviewing skills. Bryan encourages Clark to talk to Gloria, whom he likes, and Clark eventually does.

Clark gains new powers, including producing heat and shooting lasers. After accidentally setting his physics textbook on fire, he stops burglars from entering the farm. Meanwhile, Lana interviews Montgomery Mankins and is surprisingly impressed. Clark uses his X-ray vision to look through Dr. Wesley's office and sees a picture of his farm, leaving him suspicious. He later discovers something hidden under a tarp in an old barn. After confronting his father, Clark decides not to push the issue, leaving the mystery unresolved.

During a bonfire party, Clark mingles with old friends, impresses his peers in beer pong, and learns that Wesco bought local farmland. When a fight breaks out, Clark goes through the flames to save Paul but comes out unharmed, amazing Lana. Later, Clark and Lana investigate suspicious men and are ambushed and shot at, leaving Clark worried about Lana. Deputy Rogers dismisses Lana's concerns about missing workers. Clark discovers a bullet hole in his shirt, realizing he was shot but remained unharmed, before observing an escalating protest.

## My Opinion

I honestly really enjoyed the book up until this point. I like how there are many small mysteries, some of which seem connected or related. Details like the burglary and the picture of Clark's farm in Dr. Wesley's office make me wonder how the events are connected. Wesco buying local farmland also creates suspense. It feels like we are waiting for something big to happen, but we don't know what is next. This keeps me hooked, and when each chapter ends, it makes me want to keep reading.

The only flaw of this book, I would say, is that there are many events without a big plot twist. I also want to know why someone rich, like Lex Luthor or Bryan Mankins, is in Smallville. I find it interesting how the narration makes you think about which events could be related and which could be coincidences. I also wonder what is under the tarp in the old barn, as it could uncover the truth or show how these small events are related. It makes me wonder if Clark's parents are involved in some events, since Jonathan didn't exactly want to show Clark what was under the tarp. Overall, this was a great book, and it's simply written. However, I would like to see a big plot twist soon. ...more "
