This was A LOVE STORY, and I loved it. It beautifully captured not only romantic love in the most tender way, but also:
1. Familial love and a deep bond between an aunt and her niece
2. Love and sacrifice in friendships/family of choice
3. Love for a career in NASA that most women hadn’t even dared to yearn for

TJR does historical fiction so well. It doesn’t feel dry and doesn’t hit you over the head with education. She painted such a good picture of what it was like to be one of the first female astronauts in the 1980s. They were so brilliant and absolutely badass! It was fascinating to see how all the women in Joan’s cohort navigated the gendered power dynamics differently. You could fault Lydia for laughing at the men’s crude jokes, for example, while also understanding the pressure she felt to represent all women and not be viewed as too “sensitive” to be up for the job. Joan, though, was courageous in owning her more traditionally female traits and was successful because of this, rather than in spite of it.

“She was trying to prove that she could be just like a man to all of them… Because the world had decided that to be soft was weak, even though in Joan’s experience being soft and flexible was always more durable than being hard and brittle. Admitting you were afraid always took more guts than pretending you weren’t. Being willing to make a mistake for you further than never trying. The world had decided that to be fallible was weak. But we are all fallible. The strong ones are the ones who accept it.” p 102

And of course, it took tremendous courage for Joan to love a woman in a time when it was not accepted, particularly for those like her in the public eye. They took big risks to be together, but there was never any doubt that it was worth the sacrifice.

“In all of her time spent watching others, she hadn’t picked up on this part of falling in love, that someone could look at you as if you were the very center of everything. And even though you knew better, you’d allow yourself a moment to believe you were worthy of being revolved around, too.” p 187 ...more "
