I am choosing to exhaust every route in helping my 8 year old daughter before considering medication. After my daughters fourth therapy session I was told she may have Bi-Polar disorder. I was recommended a special school to take her to for an assessment. The school seemed perfect because they do hands on therapy during class to teach the kids coping skills, but also medicate the kids. When I told them, however, that I did not want her medicated I was basically told to go somewhere else until I was ready to medicate her. IF they really wanted to help these kids they would offer the therapy w/out the meds as well. And let me just add that they are expensive and partly covered by insurance (I will get back to this). What concerned me most was that across the street from the school was a child study center. I looked them up and they medicate kids who have psych disorders or who are PREDISPOSED to them which I found alarming. I was told my daughter would more than likely be put on mood stabilizers and ADHD types of medications after only the second class which is when she would be assessed by the psych. Then he would give the prescriptions to the nurse and she would let me know what meds to get filled from the pharmacy (through my insurance). I questioned them about why the psych did not first observe the kids and then recommend meds after the assessment AND observation. I was told that the info provided by the parent and docs one time assessment was enough. SO..my point here is that nothing is scientifically proven or a sure thing...I am finding that many of the alternative methods for helping kids are being called fake or the docs being called quacks but those psychiatrists prescribing the meds don't know for sure what will help either and just experiment until they find the right cocktail of drugs to mask the symptoms. While I do believe some kids are severe enough to require the medication, many just need extra help, coping skills etc and no one seems to want to help. My husband and I have reached out and keep getting smacked w/ the solution to medicate her. Insurance is quick to cover anything that has to do w/ medication ie. that school, but will not cover alternative companies to help the kids...why???? MONEY!!!! The doctors and insurance get paid by the drug manufacturers to prescribe these meds. That is probably why that school won't take my daughter unless they are allowed to medicate her..because they get paid to do so..and the insurance probably won't cover her to attend there unless drug companies are involved. THAT IS WHY doctors do not recommend alternative methods....We as parents have to go out and find them ourselves and the alternative groups such as this one have to announce their services as advertisements. BUT so do the drug companies...look in a magazines geared towards parents/children and you will find ads for drug cures for your kids. It is ALL one big experiment. I am choosing to use the methods that will possibly help change my daughters brain for the better and not cause future harm and side affects which will only be met w/ more meds to counter those symptoms. For the parents who choose medication...to each his own and you are doing what you feel is best for your own child just please do your research first. For now, this is where I am w/ my family's journey through this minefield (what if feels like). ...more "
