செய்த வேலைக்கு மாற்றாக நெல்லும் (சம்பாவும்) உப்பும் (அளத்தில் விளைவது) கொடுத்த வழக்கத்தினால்தான் ‘சம்பளம்’ என்ற சொல் பிறந்தது என்பர். ஆங்கிலத்திலும் (Salary) என்ற சொல் (Salt) என்பதன் அடியாகப் பிறந்தது என்றும் கூறுவர்.
