There is only one series that I've found myself loving as much as this, and that's been in my top spot for going on 10 years now (Poison Study, anyone?). This series has just resonated with me. I've already reread certain scenes from this book 5 times (ok, fine, maybe more...). It's just THAT WONDERFUL. I've decided to just start this series over now, because I know that anything else I pick up is just going to be lackluster. No character is going to be as dreamy as Jaren or Caldon, or as "real" and heartfelt as Kiva.

Books that have a group of characters that form a misfit family, are just my absolute go-to. I can't get enough of them. This book particularly, does a fantastic job of this. You have rebels and royalty, as well as the additional band of tagalongs, who go on a journey across the kingdom of Wenderall. There is heavy relationship tension, obviously, after the events of book two. (Possible spoiler alert!) Honestly, if I was going to find something to nit-pick, it would be that I wish the tension between Kiva and Jaren wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. I would have preferred to have more time with the two of them together, instead of spending nearly the entirety of the book avoiding each other, and then trying to cram what we hope would be happily ever after into a small amount of pages. This book (more like the series) is proof that we do not always have to have the moody and broody main hot guy. We can actually have caring, compassionate and KIND guys that give a sh*t about the girl. He recognizes her needs and knows her wants. Sure, he was broody in this book, but that didn't stop him from caring! Every time something happened, Jaren was right there, making sure Kiva was okay, or getting emotional when some wicked part of her past (recent or old) was revealed. Thank you for this! I love a good brooding, but this relationship was so damn refreshing. I loved it so much!

I cannot express how much I loved Caldon and Kiva's relationship. I feel like it's such a rare thing in YA fiction to not have some sort of attempted (or actual) love triangle. With those two, it was just friends, possibly even more like siblings. Caldon was Kiva's secret keeper, and confidant. When they found out where Kiva had been after the end of book 2, it felt like Caldon was affected by that just as much as Jaren was. It was the same during the angeldust incident later on (which might have been my favorite scene honestly).

I would love to see something else from this series. I want to know more about what happens later on, and I want to see more of the different kingdoms from the book. The quick glimpses we got, just weren't enough. It would be so much fun to see more of them and get some back story to the relationships with the territories of the kingdom. After this series, I will eagerly await anything else from Noni. It takes a lot to end up on my favorites list, but this series did it. I can't quite put my finger on what made this feel different than other YA books of this nature, but it shines so much more brightly! ...more "
