This is the first time I have made it through this book. I've probably started it about 3-4 times, and somehow something always got in the way and I put it down again. It's not as if I wasn't enjoying it, but it didn't have that click. This time around, I was reading the series with a friend who had a) never read it before, and b) read the first book in one sitting, and was halfway through this one before I had even gotten through the first. We had so much fun discussing it afterwards that this is going to be a much shorter review (lol it's not), considering I finished it already a week ago and have since read ACOWAR as well. So, here's the retrospective I guess.

I'm gonna start off with characters, because that's reeeeeally all I'm here for and you know it. And I was not disappointed. The only one in ACOTAR that I truly loved was Lucien; Feyre was okay, Tamlin a needy bitch (oops) and Rhysand...well, you all know my opinion on him. The rest were just kind of there, and didn't make much of an impact. THIS BOOK, however, brings us to the Night Court, Velaris, the Court of Dreams, and CASSIAN, ladies and gentlemen. And Mor and Azriel and Amren etc. etc. (but Cassian is all I really care about). I LOVED the Inner Circle, Cassian and Mor especially, and the dynamics they brought to the story. I'm not huge on Azriel and Amren, unfortunately, even after reading ACOWAR. I think it's just a matter of character overload - my brain simply cannot handle all the information about all of them, enough to form an attachment. That's probably why I never suspected anything of Ianthe, to be perfectly honest, who I actually liked in the beginning. My only wish is that Lucien was in this one more instead of stuck at the Spring Court.

I almost feel like you can read ACOMAF without reading ACOTAR. The only thing you'd miss would be the worldbuilding, but everything else in this book is a change from how it was in the first one. It feels like all you would need is a summary, some information about background, and you'd be fine. Any opinions you might have had in ACOTAR, you'll probably change them by the end of ACOMAF. Rhys, obviously, is a great example. I hated him so much in the first book I nearly didn't want to continue. Yet by the end of this one, he's a fandom fave. Personally I didn't warm up to Rhys until the end of the book, and I'm still fairly lukewarm. He's just so intense and overwhelming. I understand he and Feyre are mates, and I understand that this is a very insatiable bond between one another, but WHY OH WHY DO THEY NEED TO HAVE SEX SO OFTEN AND SO GRAPHICALLY. I know I'm in the minority here, but did anyone else love Chapter 54 far more than Chapter 55??? (it's the chapter where Rhys explains how he knew Feyre was his mate, if you were too distracted by the following chapter to remember). It really felt excessive. Also, why did it take so long for the Spring Court to look for Feyre?? They knew where she was. Tamlin knew where she was. And yet, WEEKS go by after she's essentially kidnapped before Lucien and his gang show up. (I love Lucien, but it also felt weird that he tried to get her to return to the Spring Court. He knew what a bad place it was for her, and I half expected him to pass her a note telling her to run far away from Tamlin.)

There are just so many things that go on in this book, I often forgot some important plot points, or didn't pay enough attention to them when they were introduced. Amren's a big mystery to me (that didn't really get better with ACOWAR), and I think I was hoping that it would just make sense eventually. The side plot with Miryam and Drakon immediately flew over my head, and turns out its quite important. On the other hand, I was so keenly aware of some facts and plot twists that I saw them coming a mile away - including Feyre and Rhys being mates, which made it momentarily confusing when she was so angry about it. I just thought it was inevitable. Same with the mortal queens' betrayal from the get-go. They should have known better about making a deal with them, and it cost them Velaris. On the other hand, I didn't predict Nesta and Elain being turned into High Fae, so there's that. The number of plot twists at the end just kept on coming and really was a wild ride for everyone involved. (I definitely already knew about the High Lady thing (who didn't), but I was annoyed they did it off-screen and in secret, so to speak. I loved Mor's reaction to it though.)

In terms of my expectations for this book, I guess I got largely what I predicted. Considering its length, I did think we'd be further along in the storyline. I really wanted to explore more of the other courts in this one, which we do eventually get in ACOWAR, but not as much as I wanted here. I did love the idea of the King of Hybern binding their magic though, considering how heavily they lean upon it to function. It felt like they were useless without it and it was interesting to see them struggle to adapt. Anyway, this was much more enjoyable than the first book, although I'm never going to be convinced that it needs to be as long as it is. I feel there are certainly some parts that could have been cut. Either way, I'm thrilled we met some more exciting characters and that we've moved onto the actual plot of the series (even if we're not as far as I would have liked). Also, Cassian.
