Well that sums up most of the book but not all.“On The Money” is a hand on analysis of the time tested money making techniques and provides insights into the lives of the rich, the choices they often make or ought not to make. Coming from a professional banker, who has been to the places and situations he talks about, the authority he claims on the subject is solidified by his teeming sincerity found often in the objective self- help books. The book has surprisingly parallel subject matter to another Pakistani writer of world acclaim, Mohsin Hamid’s latest novel “How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia”. It seems that Pakistani intellectuals have finally decided to send professional advices as remittances back home and that too in uniquely creative ways.The book opens with the hunger pangs of Asad, a slum dweller in destitute suburbs of Lahore in contest with a stray dog to fill his empty stomach. All this would change forever, with the twist of fate and strategy. Soon Asad would meet his messiah Salman who in turn had been waiting for an ideal candidate to whom he could depart his secrets of success. Salman himself had a similar story and once had been helped by a kind mentor on a condition that he would continue the chain before his death. This marks the change in the fortunes of Asad who emerges as an international corporate tycoon moving between Singapore, Dubai and Pakistan. Each step forward on the ladder of material success had had its take on him and makes him pay in ways not material but certainly not immaterial as well. In the course of mending the broken, Asad does not only learn but also teaches a few life-long lessons; about things he ought not to have taken for granted. There are minor themes however, knitted with other characters associated with Asad. There is Samia and some unfulfilled desires and relationships, there is Kat and Karishma and the compromises on morality, religion and familial bonds. There are others like Stuart, Chao and Leila and their stories of corporate deceits, treachery and blackmailing. And finally there are Nazia, Cerys and Mohammed that restores one’s faith in humanity. While the gripping fiction unfolds it is often interrupted by detailed lectures on the wealth production modus operandi. One may also feel the author imposing his own version of reality as absolute which however, is not the case. Saleim, who has been a professional banker for over two decades, now puts his professional expertise, personal observations and sincere intentions to enlighten young fellows who have yet to enter their professional lives. He acknowledges reader’s right to disagree with his philosophy on money confident that only experience will win him their gratitude. Although the main recipients of Saleim’s omniscience remain young fellows, this particular book will certainly leave life-long impacts on its readers regardless of their age and backgrounds. ...more "
