(trying not to give too much away here for people who haven't read the book).

Like a lot of insecure women, she resents Darcy because Darcy has the cajones to go after what she wants, she speaks up for herself, and to add insult to injury, she won the genetic lottery, all of which Rachel sees as an affront to her own pathetic life. Rachel, on the other hand, lets her boss walk all over her, Darcy walk all over her, even flipping taxi drivers walk all over her, and after a lifetime of being everyone's doormat, decides that NOW she's going to go after what she wants, even though said thing-Dex-is with someone else. And we're supposed to cheer her on? No, sorry, not getting on board there.

Darcy is no walk in the park, she's downright obnoxious at times. Like many young women she's competitive and self-centered, but guess what? SO IS RACHEL. Maybe she wasn't in the past, but she certainly begins competing with Darcy, comparing herself to Darcy, and only thinking about what SHE wants, just like Darcy.

I just think Rachel is like a lot of girls who settle for being the other woman because they don't have the ____*insert looks, wit, charm, talent, intelligence, confidence, etc.* that would make them appealing enough to get their OWN guy. They somehow feel validated because a beautiful girl's boyfriend cheats with them, thinking that allowing themselves to be some guy's side piece is somehow sticking it to the girls who actually CAN get a boyfriend. How sick is that?

Sorry, I know I was meant to feel sympathetic, but I totally don't. What Rachel was doing was deplorable in the best of situations, but your best friend's man??? STOP IT.

If Darcy was a such a terrible friend, Rachel should have dumped her. Darcy being a jerk in no way justifies what Rachel did, and I found the constant reminders that Darcy is supposed to be the villain tiresome, because proof of Darcy's terrible character did nothing to detract from my opinion that Rachel was a sneaky, cowardly, conniving, you-know-what. So maybe they deserved each other as friends after all. ...more "
