Okay, so apparently this freaking book was re-written in 2008. I ordered a physical copy of this book online and, unbeknownst to me, I ended up with a new version of this book. UGH. Here's how this is passage is written in the 2008 version:
"Okay, when did I get so hideous?" Jessica Wakefield groaned. She leaned in toward her bedroom mirror as her twin sister, Elizabeth, rolled her eyes. "Seriously, Liz, it's like somebody snuck into my room last night and whacked me with the ugly stick."
I wonder if Jessica is as much of a godld-digging sociopath in the newer versions of the books? When I first started re-reading the series I actually thought "Was this written by an old lady who only knows about teenagers from interactions with the kids at her church and things she sees on television!?
