I find him to be an interesting character and see the he has a thirst for adventure and a love for the sea as mentioned many times in the book. In the book that I haven't really enjoyed is the leaps in time, often I feel like I don't know the character too well. I think many people would enjoy this book as I did though, a good target audience is people who like sailing, adventure, and people who don't like reading big books (which I find as a great quality). It is similar to "The Life of Pi" in some ways (for those who know that book/movie) because he is on a boat alone in the sea and there are natural events that twist the story.
I think the theme is that 'You will always come back to your true passion.' It's not said in the book but that is what I got out of it. That is a great lesson for everyone and anyone that misses their hobby or passion and would like the start doing it again. The reasoning for the theme is because in the book you find out that he always has these big time laps where he hasn't sailed in ten years and then just randomly comes back to it simply because he felt he wanted too.
This is a great book for anyone over 12 because some children could find what he writes disturbing or scary. This book was amazing and I suggest you read it as just a quicky. I found it very entertaining and fun to learn about his 'life on boats'!
