Pour lire vraiment, il faut le sentiment d’avoir du temps devant soi, et surtout la conviction que cette activité apporte quelque chose. Des décennies de « politique de la lecture » ont valorisé la lecture-loisir, comme si lire des livres était une fin en soi, si bien qu’on ne lit plus pour mieux connaître le monde ou pour essayer de s’« orienter dans la pensée». D’autres loisirs beaucoup plus gratifiants sont à portée de main, qui ne donnent pas, contrairement au livre, la déplaisante sensation de se trouver confronté à soi-même, obligé de penser, si possible dans le calme, loin du regard d’autrui, et donc déjà presque mort.”
