I liked the characters because I related to some of them; Josie Cormier has to decide between the popular crowd and her old friends, which I see people at my school doing as well.“Can you hate someone for what they have done, but still love them for whom they had been?"(Picoult 143).This quote shows her struggling to find a balance between her new and old friends and the choices that she makes with them.
Setting: I rate the setting in this book a 4/5.The book takes place in the small town of Sterling, New Hampshire. The book has many flashbacks, so the years very in the book from 2001 to 2007. The setting effects the story because if it happened in earlier times when guns weren't invented, then he would not have been able to shoot people. Also there wasn't organized schools back then. "It was the first warm day of March, the one where you would believe that the snow would melt sooner rather than later.." (Picoult 4). This quote shows the weather and the month, creating a visual for the reader as to what the surrounding area is like.
Plot: I rate the plot a 4-5. The book is set up in present time, then it goes to flash backs and back to present. It switches point of view from the different characters so the reader can really see into the minds of each person in the book. The ending was very surprising, along with many other events throughout the passage. As the book progresses the reader comes across a troubling event, and what caused the event to occur. The book takes you in the mind of a bullied teenager and what pressures can cause them to crack. "Chaos was a constellation of students, running out of the school and trampling the injured." (Picoult 18).
Theme: I rate the theme a 5-5. The author is trying to show the reader what harm humans can do to other humans, and how the smallest actions can lead to a big consequence. “In nineteen minutes, you can mow the front lawn; color your hair; watch a third of a hockey game. In nineteen minutes, you can bake scones or get a tooth filled by a dentist; you can fold laundry for a family of five.
In nineteen minutes, you can stop the world; or you can just jump off it.”(Picoult 224). This quote shows the significance of the title, that anything can happen in a blink of an eye.
Personal Response: I really enjoyed this book. There is so much depth and feeling behind each person and it takes the reader on a journey throughout different students lives. This book has suspense and thrill, while still playing your heart strings. I recommend it! ...more "
