Imagine that you are dying, not only from a serious lung cancer, but at the age of sixteen. You know you don't have much time and you world is filled with confusion and depression.

That how it was for Hazel Lancaster,from the book the Fault in our Stars by John Green. Hazel is a young normal girl who got diagnosed with cancer at age thirteen. She spends most of her free time locked in her room suffocated with depression. Once a week her mom would make her go to support group at a local church. Hazel hated it. She didn’t understand the point of talking about death with near strangers, if it was going to eventually happen anyway. Hazel’s closest friend at support group, Isaac is the only one who understands. That is until the day when Hazel meet Isaac’s dashing friend Augustus Waters at support group.

When Hazel and Augustus first make eye-contact, there is already chemistry. After the support group meeting Augustus tells Hazel how he thinks she is beautiful and how there is just “something” about her. Hazel has never heard this in her like, especially since she hasn't interacted with boys for three years. Augustus then Invites Hazel to his house, shocked, she accepts the invite.

At Augustus’s home Hazel ( or Hazel Grace as he calls her) meets his parents and they begin to discuss their Cancer, like most cancer kids do. Hazel has lung cancer and must bring an air ventilator with her wherever she goes. Augustus No longer has cancer but he lost his leg in the process of being cured and he now uses a prosthetic leg. They talk and exchange phone numbers as well as a book called the Imperial Affliction. Hazel gives Augustus this book to read because it is her absolute favorite and is about a dying cancer patient.

Even since the first day they meet it is obvious to all readers that Augustus and Hazel have something between them, a type of spark. They text for a while until they meet each other again about a week later. After reading the Imperial Affliction Augustus loves it as much as Hazel. Hazel then ends up telling Augustus it was her greatest wish to go to Amsterdam and meet the author. Hazel doesn't just want some meet and greet with the author, she wants to know how the book ends. The Imperial Affliction ends in the middle of a sentence. Hazel knows she wants to find out what happened to the characters.

After about a day Hazel becomes very sick and is in the hospital for about 5 days. After a near death experience Augustus is trying to get even closer with her but something is holding Hazel back. She doesn't want to fall in love with him because she doesn't want to die and leave him because she knows she is not well. However this just cause Augustus to be around her more. In Fact he gives up the one “wish” cancer kids get to take Hazel and himself to Amsterdam. Hazel is dying to go and after pleading her doctors she is finally allowed if accompanied by her mother.

Hazel, her mom and Augustus leave for Amsterdam about a week later. On the flight there Hazel and Augustus are filled with excitement. While Hazel’s mom sleeps Augustus and Hazel read each other poetry and right before the plane lands he tells her that he is in love with her. Hazel is enchanted but cannot come to say it back.

The day after they arrive in Amsterdam they go to meet the author of the book, Peter Van Houten. They expect him to welcome them since he had agreed for them to meet him at his house. Instead Peter is extremely rude to Augustus and Hazel and tells them there is no ending or they wouldn't understand it. Hazel is infuriated and begins to cry, which rouses Augustus who comes to her defense. After leaving in a fit of disappointment they try to find something to keep their vacation upbeat.

They go to many museums and while in the Anne Frank museum, Augustus wants to make Hazel feel better. He can also no longer control himself. With that they kiss in the middle of the museum. Hazel cannot believe what she is done but she decides she likes it. This kiss leads to the beginning of their relationship in Amsterdam. They officially decide they love each other and become a couple.

On their last day in the city of Amsterdam Augustus tells Hazel some horrifying news. He has been re diagnosed with cancer.Although this time it isn't just in his leg its all over his body.
Hazel is crushed. She has fallen in love with Augustus and for all this time she thought cancer would take her from him, she is now confronted with the fear it might be the other way around. Hazel tells him she will stay with him through all his pain and treatment. She tells him he is on a roller coaster that only goes up. Hazel and Augustus are each other's support for the next few tough months. Hazel has to quickly realize whether Augustus stays or is taken, he will forever have touched her. ...more "
