The second book in Veronica Roth’s acclaimed Divergent trilogy continues the story of Beatrice Prior, a 16-year old girl living in a dystopian society in which people are separated into five factions based around a trait of humanity: Dauntless (bravery), Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peace), Candor (honesty), and Erudite (intelligence.) When the inhabitants of the factions turn 16, they must take an aptitude test to determine their compatibility for each faction. On choosing day, they must chose whether to leave their family and faction behind for a new one or stay in their original faction. In the previous book Divergent, Beatrice chose Dauntless, leaving her family behind in Abnegation and taking on the new name Tris. Her brother Caleb also chooses to leave Abnegation for Erudite. Though Dauntless initiation was tough at first, she soon surpasses all expectations and thrives, much to her rival Peter’s distaste. She also begins to form a relationship with her instructor, Tobias Eaton otherwise known as Four. But as in most dystopias, something always goes wrong. Close to the end of initiation, Tris discovers the Erudite’s plan to use the Dauntless to attack Abnegation. After the final rankings are posted, All the Dauntless are injected with a serum that forces them to carry out the attack. But Tris is not affected since she is divergent, meaning she is able tell if she is in a simulation and manipulate it. After a series of events in which Tris’s family dies in the hands of mind controlled Dauntless and Erudite, Tris ends up shooting and killing her friend Will because he was under the simulation. She stops the simulation with help from Four and boards a train to Amity to find other Abnegation survivors. The second book Insurgent goes from where it left off with Tris, Four and Caleb on a train to Amity and the Erudite following closely on their trail. Tris feels overwhelming remorse for what happened with Will, which impairs her fighting abilities. They move from faction to faction. Tobias discovers that a member of his family he thought to be dead is still alive and Tris discovers one she thought to be trustworthy is a traitor. As close friends and family die, Tris begins to question her part in all of this.
The book was too long. The details were long and unnecessary, and though one of Ms. Roth’s strengths is fast paced and in depth fight scenes they sometimes were uncalled for and stretched out. It seemed that nothing much occurred until the last hundred pages. Tris was becoming very frustrating, to me and to other characters as she was constantly moody and reckless. If she didn’t care if she lived or not, why should the reader? Despite this, the book was a page-turner at the exciting parts and a wonderful read at parts when you weren’t irritated with Tris. The twists in the story were actually surprising, and unlike most dystopian books it was not predictable at all. The book is a refreshing because realistic consequences come of the characters actions. Also, Tris is just like everyone else. She is not treated as something other, like Katniss was in the Hunger Games. Like most sequels it was not as good as the first one but still a must read if you liked Divergent. ...more "
