The book Catching fire by Susan Collins is a must read. It is funny and action packed. One part I thought was funny was when Katniss said what their daily life was like. She replied, “I hunt, Peeta bakes, and Haymitch drinks.” Another funny part is when the makes fun of the government by saying, “it must be pretty fragile, if a handful or berries can bring it down.” One last part that I thought was hilarious was when Peeta said he and Katniss were getting married in front of the capitol and they really weren’t.
Another reason I recommend this book is because it is action packed. Some of the stuff in the book is really gross, so if you don’t like that this is probably not the book for you. One point were there’s a lot of action is in the arena. Here’s one part were there’s descriptive writing, “ his trident went whizzing over my head and there’s a sickening sound of impact as it finds its target.” Another example is “I shoot at him and he manages to block the arrow with his belt before it can skewer his liver.” I know disgusting. Maybe a little to descriptive and that brings me too my next point.
Susan Collins uses so many descriptive words it gives me a headache. One of these sentences is “ a sickeningly sweet odor begins to invade my nostrils and I reach for the others, shouting for them to wake up.” Another sentence is “I brush the damp blood strands of hair back from his forehead, find the pulse drumming against my fingers at his neck.” In that one sentence she used 2 descriptive words damp and drumming.
I must of used the dictionary 1,000 times when reading this book! There were so many words I didn’t know. She used words like menacing and fetching. Another sentence is “I brush the damp blood strands of hair back from his forehead, find the pulse drumming against my fingers at his neck. But the descriptive writing makes the story more exciting and you learn new words along the way.
Overall I give the story a 4.5 out of five stars. What I liked about the book is it was full of action, and the story was full of ups and downs. At some points I couldn’t put the book down. The reason I didn’t give a 5 is it was a little slow at times and there were some parts the author didn’t need to add, like when Peeta almost died. What was the point of that? On the whole I strongly suggest getting you hands on this incredible book.
