"Tis 1 part of the book stuck with me and irritated me. The daughter is in the hospital and her brother hit his head. He cracked his head open and according to his father, "one kid in the hospital is enough. His skull is hard enough so the hospital won't help". This made me furious, who wouldn't take their kid to the hospital. Their daughter also burnt herself making hotdogs but why do her parents continue to let her?" Mar 04, 2014 05:19AM

"Francis is a immigrant from Germany in the1900s. She's 11 and has to work, against her parents wishes for money. Francis collects garbage in the street and sells it. At the end of the day she unwilling gives her share to a 10 year old to keep safe because she is a girl and is rendered incapable. This bothered me. Not only is it sexist but it is unfair to Francis I think this will become a problem as the story goes on" Jan 28, 2014 06:49PM

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

“There is no magic cure, no making it all go away forever. There are only small steps upward; an easier day, an unexpected laugh, a mirror that doesn't matter anymore.”

“This is not our fight', the old man said. 'British or American, that is not the choice. You must choose your own side, find your road through the valley of darkness that will lead you to the river Jordan. . . Look hard for your river Jordan, my child. You'll find it.”
Laurie Halse Anderson, Chains
