We thought, at the time, that it was because Pecola was having her father’s baby that the marigolds did not grow.
Oof. This is basically the second real sentence of the novel (preceding is stream of consciousness). She uses the bulk-of-story-is-a-flashback device as a Trigger Warning, *inside* the text. In 1977. Brilliant. (and brutal :(
