One of the characters that I found interesting was the neighbor, because she is a hoarder that is afraid of going outside, but she knows so much about everything and seems really experienced, and knows what she is talking about, that could possibly be because she is just talking about common knowledge things, but to Heidi, she is probably the smartest person she could ever imagine. The thing I do not understand about this book is how the mentally challenged lady had a baby, and what happened to the father. I would not want to trade places with anyone in this book, because the mom has mental disabilities, the neighbor is a hoarder and afraid of leaving her apartment, and the little girl is stuck with a crazy person and a disabled mom, and she has no friends accept for a little boy that called her a retard, and she has never done anything besides take the trash out.
I could imagine myself meeting the main character, Heidi (the little girl), I think I would meet her while she is taking the trash out for her neighbor, or running away, because that is the only time she is allowed outside. I would stop her as she is running and ask her where she was going.
“I need to know,” she would say.
“Know what?” I would say back.
Without hesitation she would reply this as if she has rehearsed it a thousand times in her head “What is outside the walls of my small apartment, to know what people look like, different colors of people’s skin, and how they interact in groups, to know the sound of a group of people playing games in the park, to know what sadness really is, and to know how to be normal, to know how it feels to climb to the top of the highest mountain and just sit and stare at the view, breathe the clean air and make shapes and faces out of the clouds, to feel the rush of going on a roller coaster like I read about in books, to see animals I have never seen, to ride in a car, buy whatever kind of clothes I want, to know the meaning of life, to be free.” ...more "
