The calico cat had been dumped in the forest, and left all alone. She has to fight for survival. This calico cat is the mother of two well behaved kittens, Sabine and Puck. The family went on a stroll through the forest and ran into an old, beat up, dirty house with an old dog under the deck. A scary man owned the house and disliked animals.
The Underneath was written with details that helped me visualize the plot better. First, when I looked at the cover at the book it did not look interesting at all. I picked up the book and started reading it, and I became attached the story. I love reading about animals and this book was an easy read, with the imagery. I loved reading about the characters because there was drama created through the text. Gar Face, the owner of the dirty house owned a dog names Ranger. Gar Face kept Ranger on a metal chain and barely fed him. The calico cats arrived and lived with Ranger under the deck until the mom died. The two kittens fight for survival with Ranger and have many conflicts along the way. It was very believable to think Gar Face is rude and egocentric due to killing the mom cat, and not feeding the dog.
Kathi Appelt created a detailed illustration of the setting depicting where the animals lived. Furthermore, the setting was under Gar Face’s deck. She described many objects under the deck, which made it realistic. Kathi described the rocks and their texture, the insects, and creatures surviving under the deck as well. Also, Appelt mentioned the bloody sores and cuts Ranger had on his neck from the chain Gar Face kept him on. The plot was not complicated at all, it was a fast pace novel that caught my attention. The author did not use different points of views, she kept it in third person. Additionally, Appelt discussed the feelings and agony the animals had.
The theme of The Underneath is friends and family help each other through hard times. Moreover, this is the theme because even though the mom calico cat passed away, Sabine and Puck still assist each other in times of need. Both of the kittens help Ranger as well. They help him find food, and keep him company. They also find a way to break the chain. I agree with the authors big ideas because overall everyone helps everyone.
In conclusion, The Underneath was a great story to read and I encourage anyone to read this book. It has great details and life lessons throughout the novel. Furthermore, it does have sad parts, but it gets you attached to the book. I could never put this book down due to the great details and imagery. It was amazing to see how the kittens survived without their mom but only with Ranger. Kathi does a great job expressing the details throughout the novel and this helps attract your attention to the book. ...more "
