It took me a really long time to read this book

It took me a really long time to read this book. Not because I didn't enjoy it, because honestly, I mostly loved it, but just because it was quite a difficult read. The formatting was small and the way certain sentences were worded made it quite difficult to keep up with what was happening. However, I did love it. It's Lord of the Rings, how can anyone not love it?

There is a quote on the back of my version of the book:

"Masterpiece? Oh yes, I've no doubt about that." - EVENING STANDARD

And honestly, I feel that.

I know I've rated this book as only 4 stars, but that is mostly due to the writing style, and the fact it took me so long to read. I think we all know the plot of the book, and the characters are phenomenal.

The book is set in Middle Earth, where Frodo comes into owning a ring, the one ring. This is found be Gandalf the Grey, and he realises it must be destroyed, as The Dark Lord is coming, and all of Middle Earth is in danger. Frodo, a hobbit, is left as ring-bearer, and must make the journey to Mordor to destroy it, but he is followed by a Fellowship of 9. Gandalf the Grey, Aaragon, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, and 3 other hobbits, Merry, Pippin and our Sam.

The company faces many challenges on the first leg of their journey, not least is Gandalf falling in the fight with the Balrog, a heart wrenching scene that had me envisioning that part of the film, and ends with Frodo and Sam separating from the group whilst they decided where is best to go. Minas Tirith or Gondor.

Overall, this book is quite obviously a masterpiece, a book in which all others shall be compared to. A book which, quite frankly, changed the fantasy genre forever, for the better. I am honoured to have read it, and look forward to rereading it many times.
