In his book, Hawking describes the fundamentals of the how the universe, and all that it contains, works. Using ideas from the great minds of Galileo, Plato, Aristotle, Einstein, and many others, Hawking puts these ideas in normal, simple English. He goes into great detail about how the Universe came to be, how it works, and what the Universe actually is. By drawing multiple diagrams, graphs, etc., he really makes these normally hard topics meant only for the intelligentsia of society easy to understand for everyone else. He really took his TIME with this book and really avoided using too harsh of terms. Hawking really makes learning about physics fun and interesting. He also uses some of his own humor, which, at times, can be entertaining. Along with learning the ideas of great philosophers and scientists, Hawking also goes through past theories, ideas, and other explanations of the Universe and applies modern theories to help understand where the previous thinkers were going and got their ideas. I really liked the way he went over normally difficult topics and concepts such as the uncertainty principle, black holes, wormholes, and time travel. Although I'm not an expert on these topics whatsoever, I still found them interesting to learn about.
I overall thought this was a great book. Since I love to try to learn about things like physics and the Universe, this book was perfect for me. However, some of the language did get a little technical and wordy at times which made me have to reread pages and sections a few times over. Because of this, I strongly suggest that you have internet access readily available in case you have to look up some people or technical terms. But other than that, I thought that he went into just the right amount of detail for each subject. By that I mean that he didn't bore me with too many details that would make the text dry, but he used just enough detail to make the topics very interesting. Also, because he is so smart and excellent at conveying information, the book moved from topic to topic very smoothly. He took just enough time to explain the topic and answer any questions I had been formulating in my head, then moved on to the next section. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will be probably rereading it in the future.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in physics, the Universe, or anything that involves a lot of thinking. This book really makes you think about things you would probably never think to think of on your own. I'm sure my dad and a lot of his friends would enjoy this book, so I'll definitely be recommending to them. I would also recommend it to a lot of my own friends, as I'm sure they would, at the very least, appreciate the writing and information of this book. ...more "
