I know that they want us to feel their pain or explain how they succeed in surviving a pandemic or war or the great depression.
Black boy didn’t meet what I thought would be something to actually care about. Most of the stuff that Richard Wright wrote about were his struggles about his life and his troubles but Mein Kamf was exactly the same thing. Hitler whining and telling people about his struggle. What Neil Genzlinger says about that is don’t let people relive your misery because no one wants to feel the pain you felt of feared. He calls people a sadist who tells people about the pain that they experienced in a difficult episode that they had.
Another thing that memoirs always have Is the writer is the main character. Why not have the character as a minor character and the minor character a main character. Talk more about that character than the writer his or herself. Talking about a minor character than a major character would have a different feeling than the common writer talking about every bit of his life so detailed and he doesn’t even remember what color the hair of his best friend or his eye color or any detail that a regular person would know by heart.
Richard also talks about his child hood for 2/3 s of the book. It doesn’t always have to be about all of your child hood. No one wants to hear someone about their first crush or their first book that they read or the first time they tied their shoes no one want to hear the same story that every human on earth has experienced and passed that moment. N one wants to relive that as well because their childhood probably had something bad happen in it as well like they burned their favorite toy and now they are a burned victim or their friend left the school or they left their town and they will never see them again.
Although all memoirs are the same Black boy succeeds like some others because they not just feel someone’s pain but you and other people can feel discriminated by someone in many ways. If it was the 1900s or today someone can feel a bit of Richards pain in some way. If it was abandonment or a need to belong someone feel the pains of memoirs. ...more "
