Feeling alone, she turns to strange men and drugs in an attempt to comfort herself. Finally, Cheryl realizes that she needs to face her issues, so she sets off on an expedition to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. At 2,560 miles long, this trail goes from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. Parts of the trail are desert, where hikers may go without a water source for over 60 miles, and other parts are very mountainous. Going on this hike as a single woman is obviously an amazing feat. This book narrates her physical pain, emotional overcoming, and tells a great story of her journey on the PCT and the people she meets along the way.

Although I haven’t quite finished the book, I’ve loved it so far. One thing that surprised me, and that readers should be prepared for, is the author’s style is a bit more casual and lacks stimulating vocabulary. However, the casual writing style really allows readers to connect and apply the content to their own life situation. The part of the book that I, and most readers, fell in love with was the story. There isn’t much dialogue; a lot of the book is just Cheryl’s mental reflections, thoughts, and descriptions of her surroundings. Because of this, Cheryl’s character became very apparent and I felt as though I genuinely knew her.

This book is certainly not a suspense or action novel. If you are one who normally only reads fantasy, thriller, or mystery novels, this book will not be for you. Its lack of an action packed plot and its slow pacing won’t excite you. However, if you like either realistic-fiction novels or memoirs, you will love this book. The fact that this is a true story and that the struggles that Cheryl experienced were real will help you connect with this story. It may even help you overcome some struggles of your own or give you hope that you can overcome them. Readers who are interested in this book, be prepared for a heartwarming story of emotional struggle and eventually overcoming. If you read this book, you will fall in love with Cheryl Strayed and her amazing journey will inspire you beyond belief. ...more "
