To Paley, the “intricate contrivances” of nature were evidence that there was a Divine Watchmaker, namely God.
Paley’s example of a watch merits an argument to the contrary.
Skilled artisans like a watchmaker and factories producing watches and other goods are no mystery but can easily be observed.
Whereas it is not observable to see god creating a world, speaking to people to teach his will or then granting rewards like rain or punishments like drought.
I believe I’ve seen paleys idea presented as a Midrash citing Rabbi Akiva discussing a piece of art.
