How many 80 year old men do you know that can single handedly catch an 18 foot marlin over a span of 3 days? Not many…. The book “The Old Man And The Sea”, written by Ernest Hemingway, is about that exact scenario. With his streak of not catching any fish reaching 80 something days, an old fisherman sets off for another daily fishing trip. On this day, he is rather determined to get one, so he heads out further than anyone else in order to get the “beast”. The story is about the battle that comes next. As a fisherman myself, I really enjoyed the storyline of this book and it captured my interest. It was well written and I found it appealing to my reading standards. This book has a lot of life lessons and I liked that about it.

The theme of this book is to never give up on what you do best, even in the worst of times. This old man had dedication to what he loved and that is what made it such a great story. The ending of this book is very sad because after the old man ends up catching the fish of a lifetime, a group of sharks come and eat it. He knows that he conquered the battle against ‘the beast” and there was nothing he could have done differently to avoid the outcome. The characters in this book are the old man and a young boy named Santiago. This character, Santiago, played an important role in the story because he was always there for the old man giving him anything he needed. The setting of this book took place in a small village that was almost all fishermen. The people in the town didn’t have much money, if any at all.
When the old man is out at sea Hemingway describes the setting and the events with great detail. It really made me appreciate the book that much more. Here is an example of the detail Hemingway used to describe the events. “ The line started to rise again. But the fish only continued to swim at a slightly higher level. The sun was on the old man’s left arm and shoulder and on his back. So he knew the fish had turned east of north.” (page 67) The details really made me able to picture the scenes of being on the water fishing.

In conclusion, I think this was a really well written book that I enjoyed reading. I am a fan of fishing so this book probably connected with me more than it might to others who don’t fish. I know all about being tired and exhausted but also excited about fighting a fish. Unless you don’t like a sad ending, I would highly recommend this book because it is a great, well told short story. ...more "

The plot very intriguing because it was filled with action and surprises. The made up world that Tolkien has created in this story take the reader on a fascinating journey.
The main character is Bilbo Baggins, a small Hobbit who appears to be a mix between a human and a rabbit. Very short with huge feet, Bilbo is quite the humorous character. He grows in personality as the story goes on. Bilbo starts off being shy and not comfortable with his peers but towards the end of the book he is a brave and outgoing hobbit. There are also other important characters in the story. One is Gandalf, a wizard that leads the journey that they take in this story. Gandalf is one of four wizards in the world and he has special powers and is very experienced in his field of wizardry. There are also eleven dwarves in this story. The dwarves are fat slobs that have a lot of fighting experience. The leader of them is Thorin, who was a king until a dragon desolated his empire. Bilbo, the wizard and the dwarves meet to work together to reclaim their territory which has been taken over by a dragon.
This book’s setting is very intriguing and I enjoyed how s the story progressed the setting changed. At the beginning of the story the setting was in Bilbo Baggin’s house where he hosted everyone for dinner. The descriptions the author uses make it easy to conjure up pictures in your mind of what Bilbo’s hobbit hole might look like. For example, Tolkien describes the hole as “ Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell...it was a hobbit-hole, and that meant comfort.” As the story progressed, they made their way through all kinds of forests, crossing rivers and going over mountains. At one time they encountered a very dark forest crawling with spiders and crazy creatures. This made up world creates many unique settings and makes you use your imagination.
This story is about an unexpected journey. This journey starts with the ultimate goal for the Dwarves to take back their kingdom , ,which at one point was the biggest and richest in the world. During this journey, they have to deal with many big problems along the way, such as it’s people getting sick or getting attacked. The biggest conflict is that there is a dragon protecting all of the gold that lays inside the kingdom walls. In order to take back the kingdom, they have to kill the dragon,who is known as “Smaug The Great”.
I would highly recommend this book because of it’s unique characters, surprising settings and a plot full of adventure. It is a book that you can read over and over and still enjoy the details and story. Any reader looking for a great fiction story will enjoy reading J.R.R.Tolkien’s book, The Hobbit. ...more "
