This book goes into perspective of a fourteen year old boy named Sig whose father, named Einar, died in an ice storm up on a lake. Along with coping with his death, Sig now has to deal with the body and the burial and also now has to take care of the rest of his family. Then conflict really starts to erupt when a very big man shows up to their shack in the middle of the winter claiming that his father owes him a lot of gold. Sig, having no money to give to the man has to decide to use an old family relic, his father’s revolver pistol, as defense to protect the family. By him using the type of writing style that he does, I can tell that Marcus Sedgwick wants to entertain his readers. With the mixture of adventure, excitement, and tragedy, I assume that other readers will be entertained with this story. I know that because if you read a book that doesn’t have exciting parts in it then you will very bored and displeased with the book. But since I have read a book like that, I know what an entertaining book has in it. Also, I believe that this is one of those entertaining books. From reading this book, I can tell the theme of this book fairly easily. What Marcus Sedgwick tried to put forward as the theme is that even though you might be alone, you need to be brave and take a stand for yourself. Another subtle theme he put into this book is that you shouldn’t take life for granted and you should spend all the time you can with the ones you love. A quote to demonstrate this theme is, “Sig stared and stared, in his own way frozen in the chair, waiting for his father to get up, smile again, and start talking. But he didn’t. They say that dead men tell no tales, but they’re wrong. Even the dead tell stories.” (1,2). This quote is found right after he finds his father’s dead body out in the cold. This example shows that Sig really cared for his father and was not prepared for his father’s death. And Sig now realizes that he now has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. He realizes that now he has to become the man of the house. The style of this book is narrative. Because Marcus Sedgwick writes this story as an exciting, yet gloomy book, I can tell that it is narrative. A quote to prove this is, “...he was dead. Einar Andersson lay on the table, his arms half raised above his head, his legs slightly bent at the knee, frozen in the position in which they’d found him; out on the lake, lying on the ice, with the dogs waiting patiently in harness” (1). This quote gives a very gloomy or dark aspect of the book which also pulls you in to read more about what is going to happen next. It is a dark part in the book because it is talking about Sig looking at his father’s dead body just wondering how he’d died out all alone. Another quote that explains the exciting parts of this book is, “Sig collapsed back onto the chair behind him and stifled the tears that began to burn his eyes, because he understood it would not help to cry… Then there was a knock on the door” (19). This quote leaves you on a cliffhanger that excites you to know what happens next. This is exciting because Sig was very sad in this part of the book and then someone had knocked on his door which no one had done since a long, long time ago so you get really anxious and excited to see who is on the other side of the door. I am almost in the middle of liking and disliking Revolver. I am in the middle because I do like Marcus’ story and what goes on in it. If I could change anything about this book it would be the form in which the book was written. One thing that makes me not like the way Sedgwick wrote this book. Even though his writing form is very interesting and unique it was a little hard to follow. I found myself a little lost within the book every once in awhile. Other than that I enjoyed his book. It is a very suspenseful book that pulls you in to read even more....more
