I have been trying to observe my son since he was 4 months old and I first read "The Montessori Method" but have felt loss as to what my observations of him actually meant! With Carol's guide in "The Child Whisperer" I feel like I am better able to understand and meet my children's needs.

In my own little family we have one of each type, my husband is the "More Serious Child", I am a "Fun Loving Child" while our almost 5 year old son is the "Sensitive Child" and our 2 year old daughter is the "Determined Child". Carol explains so clearly and concisely exactly what it means to be each type of child and how the movement of that child is reflected throughout their life. With this new understanding of myself, my husband and our children, I feel capable (for the first time as a parent) of being able to fully honor and respect my children for who they are! I understand now what things I can do to better support my children in living true to their nature and create harmonious relationships within our family.

For example: I have learned that due to my son's sensitive nature I should not push him to succeed, but due to my daughter's determined nature she will actually do better if I do push her to succeed. This is something I never would have considered before reading Carol's book, but now it makes sense even considering how young my daughter is! She is only 2 but she already knows the entire alphabet and counts to 20 and corrects herself on both if she realizes she has made a mistake! And she does it because she is trying to keep up and compete with her older brother!

To better support my son, who as a Type 2 is very detail oriented, I had him help me create a daily schedule where I put in the absolutes (mealtimes, lessons and class times) and he chose where to put the "other" things he needs to and wants to do each day (practicing piano, personal reading time, playing the Wii). Our days have been going so much better now that HE has a schedule he can refer to. As a random type 1, I have never done well with a lot of structure so I haven't ever been able to use a schedule successfully for myself. With this schedule being HIS schedule it is something that works for both of us AND it makes me a better parent to have set mealtimes since I have been pretty inconsistent in that regard. I am so grateful for my son and that he brings the gift of more structure into my life!

With my daughter, I am honoring her needs and responding to them in a much more timely manner so that as a Type 3 she doesn't exaggerate her determined nature and come across as pushy. She is such a delight and I am thankful to understand her true nature now (at the age of 2) so that I can honor and respect her needs and wants as she grows older. I am sure that without this understanding I would have squished her determined nature and the teenage years would have been much more difficult. And as my daughter is now starting to get to the age where she will play with other children, I am so grateful for the insight that she would do best to have little girlfriends that are either Type 3 themselves or Type 1 so that they can keep up with her forward pushing nature!

As important as it has been to learn how to read and understand my children, I am SO grateful for the gift this book has brought into my life to better understand my siblings and the past misunderstandings and hurts that happened in our family growing up. So much of the family drama we now experience would be non-existent had this information been available 40 years ago when my parents were beginning their family. It is my hope that as my parents really take this book to heart and implement the tips/guidelines Carol suggests that the deep wounds felt by some members of my family will be healed and we will finally experience true peace in our family. ...more "

I started it wondering how different it could be from the myriad of other self-help get out of debt books out there.... but he does have a much different take! Rather than focusing on lowest principle (Ramsey) or highest interest (Suze Orman), he recommends that you take your total balance, divide it by the minimum payment (not what you are currently paying on it, just the min payment) and then write that number down. Do this for ALL your debts. You then prioritize which debt you pay off first by which one has the lowest number because that number is the amount of payments it will take you to pay off your card. By starting with the debt with the smallest number (mine was a 14 and my highest was an 86), then even if you can't make a power payment you still know which card you will pay off first and about when you will pay it off (since this equation doesn't take into account how much interest you will pay). After the first card is paid off then you snowball as all the other gurus have suggested. I think this is a very practical solution, especially for people who have a hard time coming up with any extra money to make a power payment every month because they are so tight on money - but it still gives them the plan, the outline of what debts to pay off first AND most importantly, the emotional motivational to keep pursuing the prize of financial freedom.
Obviously with this plan you STOP buying things you can't pay cash for - and that is probably the hardest part about ALL the financial guru's advice, exercising that self discipline.
Once the first card is paid off, then you roll that minimum payment onto the minimum payment of the 2nd lowest numbered card and pay that one off sooner.
