"in the first story of "Root," I wept. the story spirals out to the tragedy of the American Chestnut blight, which wiped out over 4 billion of these "redwoods of the east" within fourty years. i grieve their loss and feel their ghosts here in Appalachia.
"The chestnuts up North were majestic. But the southern trees are gods."
