I think one of the main reasons I love this book specifically, is the way Rowling writes mystery, encompassed in a world like Harry Potter's. I've always been a huge fan of mystery novels, and knowing how this book turns out, it's fascinating to see all the clues and red herrings Rowling dropped about the various plots in this book.

Remus Lupin quickly became one of my favorite characters in the entire series (including Tonks in later books), and I appreciate the time Rowling took to create an air of mystery around Lupin as well, although not as direct as Sirius Black's plot, and the eventual relationship she built between Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs, and Snape, leading to the partial reveal of his hate towards them, and Harry's father as well. It also makes me wonder if Hogwarts will ever have a stable, normal Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor at any point ever again.

Black's mystery, and believed killing of Harry's parents, and the other muggles too, that sent him to Azkaban, was such an intriguing plot line that encompasses this year at Hogwarts, and the tension that is built throughout the entire book to it's ultimate climax and reveal, is so much fun to read. The way Rowling builds the various stories and beliefs around Sirius without actually revealing him until the latter part of the book, and the revelations that follow, was was just brilliant in my opinion.

The reveal of Lupin's friendship with Black is such a fascinating storyline, along with Pettigrew / Scabbers reveal, and their relationship with James and how the Secret-Keeper was switched at the last moment without anyone's knowing except for Black and Harry's parents, made for the added revelation's at the end that much better.

It is also fun to note that when James, Peter, and Sirius eventually realize about Lupin's werewolf side, the lengths they go to to help their friend in his times of need, and the bond that is built between the four of them during their past times at Hogwarts, parallels the friendship and deep connection that Harry, Ron, and Hermione have built between them too.

The Dementor's are such terrifying and fascinating creatures that are introduced in this book, and their air of mystery too, and constant presence throughout the book, along with Lupin teaching Harry how to resist them, added to the seriousness and danger that everyone thought Black brought to the wizarding and muggle world years ago, only added to the eventual reveals at the end of the story, which gives it such a great mystery element to this book.

I love how all the characters continue to grow throughout the series, and continue to look forward to re-reading the rest of the series again. ...more "
