Earlier in the book, Roth talks about depositors withdrawing their money from banks to store in safe deposit boxes, and also moving their money from banks to put in US Postal Savings accounts. It seems very odd that he is so against increasing the money supply (presumably, by the Federal Reserve). He is also distressed as more and more countries go off the gold standard. He is a supporter of Hoover, even though economic conditions were so dire, and continuing to decline for so many years after the Oct '29 crash. I suspect that he was not alone, which made appropriate monetary action to correct this crisis very difficult. I don't really understand why it was easier for (e.g.) the UK to come off the gold standard and have a (relatively) less affected time in the 20s.
