I think that August should have a say in whether he wants to go to school or not, since his parents aren't listening to him and don't agree with the fact that he doesn't want to go to school. Page 12-15: After a bit of convincing due to the funny name of the principal, August is happier about the fact of starting school and he is happy to meet the principal which I think was the right decision to make. Page 15-20: August meets the principal, Mr. Tushman and his assistant, Mrs. Garcia. Whilst meeting them he is very nervous and he is afraid to look at them, so he looks at their feet. When he speaks to both Mr. Tushman and Mrs. Garcia, he notices the smaller and less important things, such as their colour of shoes and things around them, e.g. paintings and gum on desks. He likes to cover his face with his hair, to hid from things he doesn't want to see. Page 21: August meets three kids from his new homeroom for the start of the year. Jack, Julian and Charlotte. Page 29: During Augusts tour of the school he is asked by one of the students "What's the deal with your face." - He doesn't really have any feelings towards this question since he is so used to being asked this. Page 34: Augusts mum puts herself in Augusts shoes and imagine his situation and is worried for him to start school. Page 37: First day of school for August. Page 43: "Like a lamb to the slaughter:Something that you say about someone who goes somewhere calmly, not knowing that something unpleasant is going to happen to them." Page 50:"I thought I was used to those kind of stares by now, but I guess I wasn't." Page 54: August rates his first day a 5/10 which his mum thinks is pretty good and better than she expected. Page 60: "Why do I have to be so ugly?" says August, I feel as though August often embraces the fact that although his face isn't perfect he still is able to deal with most negative comments and expects it from people, but he also does seem to have many breakdowns which is reasonable to say since I personally don't think I would be very confident in going to school looking the way August does (what I imagine he looks like) or even leaving the house. Page 72: August realises people are afraid to touch him. - This reminds me of 'The Diary of a Wimpy Kid,' since the kids are afraid to touch a piece of cheese that has been placed on the ground for a long period of time. Page 77: August realises he was bullied by Jack behind his back. He is extremely hurt by this since he thought Jack was his best friend although he heard Jack saying that "Mr. Tushman asked me to be friends with the new kid."
PART 2 - VIA Page 82-83:Via is so understanding of the way August feels, she feels sorry for him and the fact that he has had so many surgeries and been through so much. She is very independent and doesn't bother her parents with anything since she knows how much stress and pressure her parents have taking August to his therapies and surgeries. Page 84: Via doesn't remember when she first saw August although she is told that she said "this doesn't look like Lily," which was a doll she was given to practice being a big sister on. Page 85: Via gets mad when people look at August strangely since she cares about him and wishes people saw him the way she did. Page 86: Via never saw August the same way other people did until one day when she came home from being away with her grandma for four weeks. I think this would be hard for Via to look at August in this way although she couldn't help it since she was away from the situation of people looking and starring at August when they just walk down the street. Grans died - it was and must have been very hard for Via to take in the fact that her grandmother had died since she was the only person Via could speak with about the situation she was put in with having a brother looking the way her brother, August does. This was because Via never complaint about anything, she never complaint about her Mum always helping August, although she felt she could around her grandmother. Will she replace her grandmother with someone else to talk to about these topics? Page 90: Via is quite annoyed since she feels as though August never speaks about anything and everyone still treats him as a baby although he is ten years old, she says "He's ten years old. He can use his words. But we circle around him like he is still the baby he used to be." Page 91: Via's real name is Olivia, only her family calls her Via since she feels as though at school she doesn't want to be called Via since she wants to have a different identity compared to her one at home. I feel as though this is very understandable since Via is put in a difficult situation and also since she is always known as the girl with the 'deformed brother,' at school. Page 94: On Via's first day of high school her two best friends, Miranda and Ella moved to the same High School as Via and she felt as though they were acting strange around her since they seemed to had 'changed.' I felt sorry for Via since she had always been best friends with these two girls and they seemed to ignore her and caught up with each other without Via over the holidays. Why did they do this to Via? Page 111: Although Via says August never speaks, on Halloween when August was "sick," he spoke to Via about his feelings and what happened with Jack. Page 117: When Miranda called to speak to August to see how he was going since she hadn't seen him for a while due to the fact Miranda and Via weren't as close, Miranda had told Via that "she misses you(Via)."
PART 3 - SUMMER Page 119: "Some kids have actually come out and asked me why I hang out with 'the freak' so much... "Because he's a nice kid." - Summer is very caring towards August and is one of the few people who don't think he is strange and weird as well as one of the few people that will touch or even speak to him. Page 128: August and Summer have a connection since they both have close relatives who both sadly past away. Page 132: Jack confronts Summer when she is not around August and asks why August is mad at him, Summer refuses to tell him since she pinky promised August she wouldn't say anything, although she felt bad for Jack so she hinted to Jack "Bleeding Scream." I think Summer betrayed August since it was very hard for August to make many friends let alone starting school for the first time and Summer had become one of August's best friend as well as one of his only friend, therefore I find it quite rude for her to hint to Jack why August was upset at Jack.
PART 4 - JACK Page 136-138: Jack had seen August before in the streets although only Jack could remember since he remembers the story as a story he will never forget, this was the reason why he didn't want to be August's 'welcome buddy.' Which is fair enough Page 146 - 147: When Jack was in the snow going down the hill it reminded me of when I was in Mt. Buller with my friend playing in the snow. Page 151-152: I think Jack is a nice person although August doesn't since he doesn't know that Jack was just going along, I hope Jack becomes friends with August again. Page 154: I think Jack is really brave for punching Julian since he stuck up for August. Page 158-159: I think Julian is influenced by his mother since she altered the school picture and photo shopped August's face out. I think it is a horrible thing to do since the mother should be setting a good example for her child. - I think Jack did the right thing by doing the things he did and sending August a friend request on Facebook and an apology email. - I think people are now being just as rude to Jack as they are to August and I think they are doing the wrong thing. - I can't Julian made that story up about Jack and I think Julian is trying to control the year level and all of Jacks friends. It reminds me of Animal Farm when Napoleon makes up stories about Snowball e.g. ruining the windmill, just to suit his own benefit. - I don't think what Julian did is the right thing although now Jack and August have more things in common as August says "Welcome to my world," when Jack says how he thinks it is so weird to have people pretending you don't even exist.
PART 5 - JUSTIN - I don't like how each part of the story starts again, I feel like they retell the story every time they have a new part, I think they should have different perspectives each chapter as well as longer chapters. - Justin is very nice and I think it's very nice of him to stick up for Jack and tell those three boys off, this reminds me of in movies where older brothers always stick up for their little brothers and friends of their brothers. - I agree with Via for not wanting to bring August to school and not telling her family about the play. Since she likes to have a separate life at school....more
