“I’ll go instead,” he says. Like his bravery counts for anything. You can’t date a girl if you’re dead.
Kinda goes to show you how she views people. This might have been meant to show how sassy and irreverent the character is, but all it really comes across as to me is her being so caught up in herself that she sees her friend selflessly offering to take her place because he cares about her as an attempt to get into her pants. For some reason.
This interaction could have worked to establish Sara as emotionally intelligent without making her seem like kind of a bitch. The author could have made it clear that this guy was into Sara, and wanted to stay behind to save her, and Sara could have said no, not because she was, like, friendzoning him, but because she didn't want to take advantage of his feelings just so she could survive. I think it would have made her much more likeable right off the bat.

Beliefs, declarations, constitutions—words. Stories. Myths. Lies. Promises. History.” Will grabbed the sheaf of newspaper clippings he kept in a stack on his desk. “This, and these”—he gestured to the library’s teeming shelves—“they’re a testament to the country’s rich supernatural history.”

“People tend to think that hate is the most dangerous emotion. But love is equally dangerous,” Will said. “There are many stories of spirits haunting the places and people who meant the most to them. In fact, there are more of those than there are revenge stories.”
