And his parent’s are so poor that he could not save his dog from death. He hates his situation but he got power from his friend, Rowdy. Rowdy is his best friend who has an alcoholic father. He is tough and tried to protect Arnold. Mr. P encourages Arnold to leave reservation. Arnold takes his advice and asks his parents about his transfer. Parent’s allowed Arnold transfers to the white school in Reardan. However Rowdy becomes upset about what Arnold decided so their relationship becomes bad. However, Arnold meets a cute blonde girl, Penelope, in his new school and they become a couple even her father doesn’t like Arnold. He also made a friend named Gordy who is a smart boy. Arnold feels like a part-time Indian because he shuttles between Wellpinit and Reardan. Meanwhile, Arnold makes the basketball team and has the first basketball match against his old school. At that game, Arnold meets his old friend Rowdy.
I like the story because I can experience a little Indian boy’s life with his narration. His narration is very pure and fun. Because of these characteristics, teenagers in America can easily feel what Arnold experiences and how he lives as an Indian boy. In the book, people can read several stories about racism, poverty, friendship, and love. I like the plot that Arnold thinks about his race and describe people around him. Racism in school was little bit culture shocks to me and when he describes people with his point of view, it was really fun. Also, I was impressed by the change of Arnold’s feeling during the basketball game. It might readers think about people around them.
Somebody said the U.S.A. is in the post-racial but I think the term is still hard to be accepted. I am from South Korean and study in U.S.A. now. My university is a Christian University so everyone is kind and nice. However, I heard from other university Korean friends that other universities still have racism and sometimes it makes some serious problems. In addition, I can see racism in our nation too. It was really helpful for me to think about people who have different skin color comparing to mine but live in the same nation. I think the book is good not only for American but also for any people who can see different skin colored people or racism around them. After reading this book, people can think about race again and understand ‘others.’...more
