Just like with the Hobbit, I would eventually get around to reading The Fellowship once I was older. After reading the book again, just like the prelude, I can once again say that this adventure was detailed and exciting.

Years after Bilbo's grand adventure, Frodo, Bilbo's adopted nephew is entrusted with the mysterious ring that Bilbo brought back with him on his adventure. Sometime later, Bilbo's old friend Gandalf the wizard informs Frodo that the ring he possesses is in fact the One Ring that was once used by the Dark Lord Sauron to conquer Middle Earth. With the Dark Lords forces on the move once again, Frodo must begin his journey to destroy the ring.

Unlike The Hobbit where Bilbo was thrust out of the Shire and into the world, Tolkien decided to take a slower approach. Frodo’s journey isn’t one where he simply walks out of Bag End and begins his adventure. He has to deal with situations that most of us would come to understand. Despite the decision in slowly getting Frodo out of the Shire, it was in my opinion well worth taking his time. This allows the reader to get to know the Shire in a way that wasn’t possible in the previous book. After Frodo gets through the first few sections of this journey, the book really picks up just like in the movie.

When it comes to characters, The Fellowship of the Ring manages to produce some fun and interesting ones. From returning characters such as Gandalf to new ones such as Aragorn, Tolkien once again has thrilling individuals that catch my attention from start to finish. From the very beginning, Tolkien really knew how to make the reader show what Frodo, Sam and the rest of the Fellowship felt as they took off together.

The lore of Middle Earth also gets quite the boast. I remember when I first learned about the history of Moria and wanted to know more about what it was like before the events of the story. The way Tolkien explains each part is always so detailed and interesting. Sometimes the characters themselves tell the tales, which makes the explanation go fast without feeling like you miss out on anything.

Even after reading this book yet again, I still feel its wonder and excitement. While it doesn’t top The Hobbit, Tolkien’s first entry to the Lord of the Rings manages to amaze and excite me again and again. ...more "
