It's not bad... the writing quality is great... the guy's vocabulary is impressive. Clearly Mieville has an epic vision of something new, weird, and impressive. He wants to write about a unique setting, full of weird freakish creatures, a vast dark city, etc... His vision is amazing. I just don't feel like it (yet) gets passed being an impressive vision. He is trying to wrap a story around his impressive vision of a world, but in doing so hasn't created a story that pulls you in. His characters are unique and full of personality, and yet I don't care about them all that much (except for Mr. Motley, he's awesome but not a protagonist!). His vision seems to be vividly of New Crobuzon and what it's inhabitants are like, but not of the specific characters themselves.
Anyways, I'm only ~130 pages in. It's not a bad book, it's decent enough. But it's too damn long to keep going without knowing that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
Has anyone had a similar viewpoint to mine and pulled through to the end? Did the story become more amazing? Did the characters become more worthy of attention?...more
