The conflict or problem in this story is, when Russ moves to Bellmont, his parents are dead and he lives in a house with his grandparents. And Finley plays basketball for the school, so when Finley's coach takes Finley to go meet Russ, there is a problem. Russ believes that he is from outer space and that his parents are gonna come and pick him up from a spacecraft. Also, since Russ believes that he is from space, he calls himself Boy 21. P.37, "I am programmed to treat all Earthlings with kindness. Greetings. I am boy 21 from the cosmos. I am stranded here on Earth, but I will be leaving soon. Enter into my domestic living pod." But there is a problem, Russ plays basketball to and Finley's coach said that Russ was an amazing player. "Here's the secret: Russell Allen played his first three years of high-school out in L.A. He gained a national reputation last year as a junior. Quite simply, he's one of the top recruits in the country. At seventeen he already has the body of a professional ball player. I've seen game tapes and i'm convinced he could play for any NBA team right now. He's a six-five point guard who can play inside and out. Smart player. Can run an offense. Rebounds. Hustles. The best high-school defender I have ever seen." P.26. But there is another problem, Finley has been wearing the number 21 since his mom died. But Russ wears 21 for basketball as well. But for some reason, when Boy21 puts on a basketball jersey with the number 21 on it, he says that he starts to play at his best. He catches it and says, “Finley, if I take this, if I start to play basketball to the best of my abilities,especially if I use my extraterrestrial powers, there’s no way that you can beat me out for the position of point guard. You’ll have absolutely no show.” p.115. But on page 114, Russ explained to Finley why he wanted the number 21 and why he had always worn that specific number. “My father was number twenty-one in high school, and he’s monitoring me from outer space. I promised I’d always wear number twenty-one for him, so long as I played ball. And now that he’s on a spaceship so far away, I feel like it’s more important than ever-but if I don’t play basketball this year, I won’t have to worry about numbers at all.” So in the middle of the book there is a problem that happens. In the second game of the year, they face up a team that have played many times before. And that team is gonna shut down the shooting guards because the point guards are supposed to give them the ball to score. And the shooting guard on Finley’s team is the best player on the team. So they are gonna shut him (Wes) down, so that means Finley is gonna be the one that has to shoot a lot. But through the first few minutes in the game, Finley starts getting nervous and starts to choke a little. P. 137. I know I’m supposed to shoot the ball, but I try to force it into Wes, which results in a turnover. “Shoot the ball Finley!” Coach Yells. The next time down on offense, when they leave me wide open Coach yells at me to shoot. I take a three pointer; it hits the front of the rim, and Pennsville gets the rebound. I miss the next three shots. We’re down eight to nothing and this isn’t working. I can’t hit a shot to save my life. “Keep shooting,” Coach says. “Keep shooting, Finley!” I try to get the ball to Hakim next, but I make another bad pass and suddenly I have two turnovers and four missed shots in a row. So then a little after that part of the book, Russ or Boy21 goes in for Finley, and earlier in the book, Finley’s coach said that Russ was one of the best basketball players he has ever seen. So when Boy21 is on the court, he is the best player out there, racking out points, rebounds, dunking the ball, and getting mostly ever single stat possible. But after the game, the other teams coach is fired up about Russ and believes he is not the right age. P.142 While Coach and Mr. Watts argue with the Pennsville coaches, who are demanding that the refs check Boy21’s eligibility, as if Coach is expected to pull out a file containing Boy21’s birth certificate and papers that document his entire life. So as the season goes on, the big conflict happens in Finley’s life. Erin gets hit by a car one night walking home from basketball practice. But the worst part is her basketball career is over. P.175. She starts talking really quickly. “Finley, my leg’s shattered. I’m never gonna play basketball again-ever. It’s over. That’s it. My season’s ruined. My basketball career is over. No chance for a college scholarship now. When they hit me, they knew it. They saw my face. I flw up onto the hood of their car. I was thrown onto the street. Now Finley has a choice to make, should he continue playing basketball or go take care of Erin. But on a specific page, Finley makes his decision. P.193, I never dreamed I’d stop caring about basketball, but I really couldn’t care less about it right now. I stand and say, “I’m sorry Coach. I have to go.” “What?” Coach says. “Where?” I stride past the opposing team, right up to Pop and Dad. “I should be at the hospital,” I say. “I want to be there when Erin wakes up.” So after that happened. Finley didn’t care about basketball and decided to quit. But there is one last thing that happened in the book. Near towards the end, Erin and her family move away because there town is really bad. So at the last day of school for Finley, his high school graduation is that day, but he receives a letter from his father. It was a long letter but Erin wrote it to him and it said how she is in a really nice place where there is no crime, it’s peaceful, and how Finley can go and move with her but Finley can’t come back to his hometown because he will be starting college and they want to start a life there where Erin lives. P.241, I run back into the kitchen and say, “What is this? Is this for real?”
“It’s a chance to get out of here and start fresh,” Dad says. “Free and clear of your family history. It’s a chance at life.” So in the end Finley goes on a train because in the letter there was a train to New Hampshire, (Where Erin is). And it just leaves us off with Finley on the train, daydreaming about his new life. ...more "
